New School Year, What tech do you need?

Every year schools goes back at the end of January, it’s around this time of year most parents start really start to dial in on what will be needed over the next 11 months for their kids. Uniforms, books, pens, pencils, name tags, the list goes on.

But what about technology?

Every year, we get parents ringing us asking for advice on a purchase for a computer. Most schools have a minimum requirement for technology and some parents simply don’t know how to ensure their kids are getting the right advice.

We see this a lot… Parents go to a big box store and buy the cheapest computer on the shelf in hopes that saving money is the right way to go. But it’s not always the case. In fact, sometimes spending just $100 more can make a huge difference to the speed of a computer.

For example, A computer that costs $499 now, will be easily outperformed by a computer the same price 12 months ago. Due to the worldwide chip shortage, brought on by COVID, technology prices are higher than ever.

Shop around, there are bargains out there. If you find a runout model for example, you might find it at a cheaper price than a newer model. It may even be faster and better internal components.

Another way these big box sellers take advantage of the uninformed is with addon or ‘spider’ sales. While it’s a great idea to get a carry bag for a laptop, do you really need Office or Anti-Virus? Does your school provide these programs? Check before you commit to the purchase of additional software.
